INTERVIEWS

DJ-Times: Hi, you've just finished your tour with Melo-D and are now about to go to Japan. Have you already reached a point of having enough of all that and what would you really like to do now?
D-Styles: I like performing and being out on the road, especially if I've got some new music that I want to try out. I think being on the road gives me that hunger to get back into the studio. That's how I felt when I was on tour in Europe. I had all these new musical ideas that kept popping up in my head and I couldn't wait to get home and record them. My only problem was how to remember them. After the Japan shows I'm back in the studio. I'm working with Toadstyle, Excess, Mike Booginowski and Ric the Rucker. We've got some goodies coming out.... The Bastard Language show vinyl, Bastard Language DVD, "a night at the Knitting Factory" DVD, Beat Junkies "Private Stash" DVD, Mike Boogie's "Soul Canvas", also I've re-released all my old break records on my own label Funkshitup Records also. A lot of new stuff happening in the next 6 months.

DJ-Times: I guess that you have seen a lot of deejays in Europe - what do you think they still have to learn? What is essential for a modern turntablist in your eyes?
D-Styles: There is no difference between musicians in Europe and musicians in America. It's either you have the ear to make music or you don't. For the turntable musician, you learn the basics of technique as your foundation (tears, transforms, flares). But after that, you rely on your ear and your creativity to make music. So that's where we're all at now.

DJ-Times: Many people use their equipment as an excuse for a lack of skills or when they can't do something so what kind of equipment would you create to reach a goal which is impossible with what we have right now?
D-Styles: I'm happy with what I have right now. My only thing is with the pitch on the turntable. That can be advanced more.

DJ-Times: In that context it would also be interesting to know what is necessary to make a great scratch record and what kind of a battle tool you would like to make if you could only think of a solution to make certain parts.
