INTERVIEWS

DJ-Times: What took dj's that long to realize that not everybody can be a soloist in a team?
Lamont: Just evolution - I guess, this stuff takes time you know! Next year we'll add another 6 members to the DJ Big Band, we'll perform with 12 dj's ...at the same time!!!

DJ-Times: Wow, that sounds great. I've always dreamed of something like a dj symphony orchestra so that people that only hear it can't tell if it's made with the turntable or not. On the other hand some love the rawness of scratched beats. Now what should be our aim? Perfect music or keeping the dirtyness of the tables?
Lamont: Our aim is to stay open minded and to work with other musicians as well, like I said before, we have a sax player in the group and every once in a while an mc and a vocalist joins us.
By the way, I don't want to diss the battle scene, but to be honest it's been very boring the last couple of years. I got my name out by earning titles, but it's time to move on!!
I still might battle, but that's going to be more of a fun thing, there's too much stress surrounding these battles nowaydays.
Perfect music or keeping the dirtyness ... - Hmmm! I like everything, we should do both and everything ...no limitations!

DJ-Times: Maybe there just needs to be a category without rankings or rules just to give people a platform to present their stuff. On the internet you can find hoards of talented guys. Is the system of the ITF out-dated?
Lamont: I think all dj federations are holding back a lot of talented people because of their rules and regulations. When you add limits it will effect the quality of the music you're trying to make. I've had this problem a lot in the past.
I don't think the dj federations should change their rules, there just should be more ways for dj's to express themselves musically outside the battle scene.
The DJ Big band performed at a 3 day long music festival in Rotterdam Holland not to long ago which was created to eliminate the stress of battling and to enable the djs to express their musical view.
Just let both exist in their realms.
