DJ-Times: Are there any plans for something like your
version of "Return Of The DJ" to show the world some new cats
and who would you put on that record then?
Lamont: I'm going to start working on a DVD project next year. I'll introduce
some new people from France, Belgium and Germany. I contacted a lot of
dj's just to hear if they're down ...and they are! I'm not going to say
more, but it's going to be cool!
I want to have a big release party featuring the dj's on the DVD.
Further more ... I'm getting my new battle record mastered in december,
I'm going to make a drumming record which has never been made before and
I'm going to tour with Grazzhoppa (founder of the DJ Big band) and we're
going to do an mpc/loop station turntable showcase kinda thing in the
future.
I'm not going to record any turntable music right now, I'm taking a break,
but somewhere at the end of next year I'll start releasing 7" records
with compositions that will be added to my new battle breaks for free
... It's going to be a busy year. And I'm going to tour with the DJ Big
band of course!
DJ-Times: Ah, yeah. That 7" drumming record (hope
I didn't spoil anything) - sound interesting. With that many djs how do
you arrange drums or basslines? Is there like one dj for cymbals and another
one who operates the toms and is it hard to control 6 djs like preventing
them from too much improvising?
Lamont: It's very easy! Easier than expected, we all know each other quite
well and what we did was jam together just to get used to each other.
We recorded the sessions with cool edit pro and kept the best tracks.
Those tracks were perfected and we wrote down a bar structure that we
rehearsed, we change the tracks around every once in a while just to keep
it interesting.
I think our freestyle sessions are the dopest since we've been playing
together a lot.
Next year we'll create a vocal section, a drum section, a brass section
... and we'll see where we'll end up!
DJ-Times: Probably with 88 djs playing piano parts,
24 bassists and about 250 horn players. Are you planning to play some
tracks that already exist (like the DJ Big Band plays Take The A-Train)
or do you only want to play your own stuff?
Lamont: I don't know, we haven't thought of playing existing stuff. Never
say never, but I think it's our purpose to create our own material.
DJ-Times: If you'd be working in a record store to
which genre would you add an LP of you guys or is it just too diverse
and what is everybody's influence?
Lamont: Hmmm ... Hip hop? Breaks and beats, Deutsche schlager, I don't
know and I don't care to be honest! :) - What about an equipment question?
