INTERVIEWS

DJ-Times: What would be the worst that another producer could say about your beats and which do you respect?
J. Rawls: I don't know. I have been told my beats are wack numerous times so I know I am not the best beatmaker. But I just like to create moods with my beats. I just like cats to feel good about my music. I have a lot of favorite producers. Spinna, Jay Dee, Kanye West, Just Blaze, there are so many more I could name.

DJ-Times: Do you only make music in the form of producing and rapping or do you still do the beat-box as in 80ies or do you play any instruments?
J. Rawls: I don't play anything very well. But I do play by ear a little. I don't beatbox very much anymore...

DJ-Times: You once rapped "Now son I know the feeling when you hit the glass ceiling". What have been situations when you didn´t believe that there was no need to run?
J. Rawls: Man I have been given false hopes of record deals so many times. That is most of it. I have been through alot in the industry. I just keep going because I love the music.

DJ-Times: Do you still have the connection to Black Star (just asking because Mos is working on that rock-lp and I think that the Kweli-sound has changed) or who do you spend your time with nowadays?
J. Rawls: I still speak to them. They are doing their thing and are very successful. I mostly do stuff with crew. J Sands, Five Deez, Fat Jon, Bj, Piakhan, Tavaris.
